Little has been done to investigate servant leadership in Indian organizations. In light of
this void, the present study explores servant leadership from the perspective of leaders
and followers in organizations. Data was collected in two phases: first using the Servant
Leadership Assessment Instrument (Dennis & Bocarnea, 2005) from followers in five
teams. In the second phase, in-depth interviews were conducted with team leaders and
followers of four teams in which followers had rated their leaders as above average
on all constructs of servant leadership and were also available for follow up. Through
narrative analysis, themes reminiscent of servant leadership theory emerged: agapao
love for followers, service as a part of leading, visionary perspective, humility and altruistic
behavior, follower’s empowerment, role modeling, and inspiration from superiors.
