The influence of the Attitudes, Ethics, and Communication (AETCOM) module on the
Emotional Intelligence (EI) of undergraduate students is studied in this research. A
comparison of EI was carried out between medical students (115) being exposed to the
AETCOM module and engineering students (135) who were not, using a cross-sectional
quantitative study design. Recruitment of the participants was done by the purposive
sampling technique, and the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire – ShortForm
(TEIQue-SF) was administered to assess EI. According to statistical analysis, medical
students appeared to have higher levels of EI compared to their engineering counterparts,
whereas gender differences between these cohorts are insignificant. A certain influence
of AETCOM is revealed in the EI of medical students who are exposed to it, which
opens the way for other academic disciplines to incorporate this module into their
curricula and improve the students’ emotional intelligence.
