The present study was designed to examine the locus of control and self efficacy in
relation to adherence to medical regime in patients with diabetes. A sample of 100
diabetic patients (41 males and 59 females) in the age group of 40-60 years was
selected. Locus of control and self efficacy were assessed using Chronic Disease Self
Efficacy Scale and Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale specially designed for
chronic diseases. Patient’s adherence to medical regime was measured with Medication
Adherence Rating scale, Adherence to Diet and Exercise scales. Correlation analysis
revealed significant associations with locus of control and self-efficacy dimensions with
the components of Adherence to Medical Regime. Further, regression analysis revealed
that adherence to medicine is significantly predicted by self-efficacy to manage shortness
of breath and other people’s locus of control. Adherence to diet is predicted by other
people and internal locus of control. Self-efficacy to exercise regularly significantly
predicted adherence to exercise in patients with diabetes.
